Katie Koufonikola's book is "an entire universe, a particular life-style: the invisible aroma that unites Europe, as we younger people know it, with the Balkans, the rich Northern culture of a bygone Greece and the city centre with its works for 2004 - the aromas of English roast beef, paprika, Indian spices and Sauerkraut all combined in the same pan..."

Welcome

I am very happy as I just learnt today that my favourite lunch-time Cafe/ Restaurant will be opening nights too. Cafe Avissinia (20 years old), situated on the famous Plateia Avissinia well known for its Sunday flea-market, is a place run by Katie and her two sons Nicola and Michael. The food is a mixture of traditional Greek recipes from different villages, absolutely delicious, natural and totally healthy, they also make the best "taramosalata" I have ever tasted which is a true sign of how good a place is. It is by far the best place to stop by and have a rest during adventures around Monastiraki and Plaka. The place reminds me of an old stylish French "bistrột" crossed with the traditional Greek kaffeneion. It is on two floors, the ground floor is directly on the plateia so you can daydream out of the large windows watching the traders go about their daily business, or you can sit upstairs and gaze at the Acropolis. The people who work there are utterly charming and you can't help absorbing the feeling of true family spirit. They play a large range of classic and folk music from all countries and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons you are treated to a live music performance, with the singer weaving her way through the tables. This makes a true weekend and Greek style "kefi", (however these days are extremely busy, so it is well advised to book a table). It is wonderful to have a place that really cares if its customers are happy, well fed and entertained."
